As I look at any of the social media communities I belong too I see nothing but bathroom counters or the small area that your camera includes that isn't part of your face, because really the selfie is nothing but a selfish act that becomes public domain. As I look at pages and pages of peoples selfie's I notice one thing, people only care about them. There is an entire world out there that is wild and beautiful, that is why the good camera is on the outside of the phone.
I feel it has started long before the selfie was even a thing, people have more and more become focused on what they are doing instead of the world around them. This seems strange when you consider that everyone now has all the information of the world in their pocket but focus on what 645 FB friends are doing, or what someone's finger nails look like.
People no longer take photos of the alpha-male tiger at the zoo, they take a photo with 3/4 of their face and a blurry-is-that-a-Liger? in the background, along with the caption "#bigcat #alpha #dude". We are no longer happy having a moment we can look back on and remember but intend to post it in order to see how many likes it gets. People go on hikes or events just to take a picture of themselves so it can be a new banner or profile pic.
There was a time when people went out to enjoy the euphoric feeling of a sun rise, not the slight shot of Dopamine of a notification. I can tell you for one that I will remember the sun rise a lot longer than I remember the +1.

Wasn't there a guy in New Jersey who recently lost a fight with a bear he was trying to take a picture of in the woods? Don't try to take selfies with bears

I am unabashedly pro-selfie. But you're right, other kinds of pictures should be taken, too. The answer is to take all the pictures of everything ever.
Unless you're shooting film because that shit adds up quick.

Agreed 100%.
I can remember using the selfie camera on my phone two times. Once because I thought I had something on my face and wasn't anywhere close to a mirror, and once because I thought I might've sat on a piece of chocolate and wanted to make sure I didn't have a big brown stain on the ass of my pants. Did not take a picture either time.
The result was negative both times, by the way.

Be in the world, not of the world. I'm not convinced about the rest of the sentiment from this Biblical paraphrase ( Romans 12:2 ), because I'm not a very religious person. Rise above the petty trappings of life and be a part of this incredible creation around you. Look out, not in.

This is precisely why Oppo is the only form of social media I use. (and really the only website I visit regularly) Nice picture, by the way!

sorry to break up the circlejerk but:
because really the selfie is nothing but a selfish act that becomes public domain. As I look at pages and pages of peoples selfie's I notice one thing, people only care about them. There is an entire world out there that is wild and beautiful, that is why the good camera is on the outside of the phone.
First off, you could say almost anything is "a selfish act that becomes public domain," and that's not just recent phenomena. Having children in an already overpopulated world? Driving a luxury car on public roads? Putting recyclables in the trash? Sending out family pictures at Christmas with smug little notes about how great you were in the past year? Creating a whole new church with yourself as the ruler because your current one won't let you divorce when your wife isn't making with the heirs? Being self-centered is hardly a new fad. Also, I don't have nearly as many selfies on my feed, so it depends on the company you keep. And no, the good camera is actually on the outside for packaging purposes.
People no longer take photos of the alpha-male tiger at the zoo
Because what good is it to yearn for the allegedly-good old days without a passing reference to alpha males?
There was a time when people went out to enjoy the euphoric feeling of a sun rise, not the slight shot of Dopamine of a notification.
Wait, I thought we were talking about selfies, not sunrise shots? Anyway, citation needed. I'm sure plenty of people waking up just to catch the sunrise still enjoy it firsthand regardless of their facebook sharing habits. Sorry you have such a negative outlook on your questionably narcissistic peers, but IMO it's really not the end of the world, nor is it anything new.

I agree with you too, there is far too many selfish deeds, I could write something on each of those. I'm not saying the selfie is worse than any of those, and really in comparison it is harmless, but it does show how little peoples worlds become.
The alpha part has very little to do with the story at all, it is focused on the alpha-male being the one you want to take the photo of for the most part, he is the most polarizing member of the society. Before you get all in a bunch about alpha male and good ol' days remove the alpha part of that paragraph and re-read it, might change your outlook.
I used a sunrise because people often too busy worrying about what filter will help a picture get the most likes instead of actually stopping and enjoying it, this is true for almost all pictures not just selfies.
We shall return to the circle jerk now if that is ok.

Haha if only I could do that, though I only really use FB to organize events anyway.
Thanks!

Meh. If anything, people's worlds were even smaller in the past. And thanks for the concern, but I am not bunched, just amused at a very predictable inclusion. In the analog days, you could say the same about photographers hand-developing photos to achieve the desired effect.
Carry on!

Bringing this idea back to OPPO, I've probably owned 15-20 cars and I've only got pictures of the last three or 4. Why? I know its my car. I know what it looks like. "Prove you took it to the Grand Canyon!" O.K. ask person A, B, or C. Until recently, I never felt a need to take pictures of my own vehicles (most people would think they're photoshopped, anyway). But lately, I've become part of the "picture/video or it didn't happen" internet world and must say I have complied. I still feel awkward taking photos of my toys, but I keep getting asked for them. I even tried to get others who found my creations interesting enough to photograph to send me copies of their pictures so I wouldn't have to. Change isn't always good, but its good to be able to live with change.
